Stonehenge, Salisbury & Windsor
About this tour
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, consisting of a circular arrangement of massive standing stones. Built in stages between 3000 and 2000 BCE, it remains an archaeological mystery, with debates over its construction methods and purpose. The stones, some transported from over 150 miles away, align with the summer and winter solstices, suggesting astronomical or ceremonial significance. Likely used as a burial site and a centre for rituals, Stonehenge reflects the ingenuity of Neolithic peoples. Its enduring mystique, cultural significance, and impressive engineering have made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of ancient human achievement.
Salisbury Cathedral, located in Wiltshire, England, is an iconic masterpiece of early English Gothic architecture. Completed in 1258, it boasts the tallest church spire in Britain, soaring 123 meters (404 feet). Its magnificent interior houses the world’s oldest working mechanical clock (1386) and one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta (1215). The cathedral’s construction utilized innovative techniques, with its distinctive cloisters and chapter house showcasing intricate medieval craftsmanship. Set within an expansive close, Salisbury Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of historical, cultural, and architectural significance in England’s heritage.
Windsor Castle, located in Berkshire, England, is the world’s oldest and largest inhabited castle, serving as a royal residence for over 1,000 years. Originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has evolved into a magnificent symbol of British royalty. The castle combines medieval, Gothic, and Baroque architecture, featuring highlights like St. George’s Chapel, a masterpiece of Gothic design and home to royal ceremonies. As the preferred weekend retreat of British monarchs, Windsor Castle also hosted significant events, including royal weddings. Its grandeur, history, and ongoing role in royal life make it a cornerstone of Britain’s heritage.
